CHATHAM - It's not unusual to sip coffee served in a funeral home, but to get a cup of java on a drive-thru is another story.

Beginning July 1, a Chatham funeral home is providing free coffee every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. for anyone who drives up to get a cup.

James MacNeil, managing funeral director at Bowman Funeral Home in Chatham, said the promotion, which runs until Aug. 26, is a way to help raise awareness about the upcoming Senior Games in September, being hosted by Chatham-Kent, and to raise the profile of the funeral home.

"I'm trying to think of different ways to reach out to the community," MacNeil said.

Members of the Seniors Games will also be on hand with banners to promote the event, which will feature participants from throughout the region, he said.

"There's very few free things in this world," MacNeil said, noting a portable sign advertising the promotion was gaining a lot of attention.

MacNeil said a Facebook page promoting "Chatham's only free coffee drive-thru" is also getting some good response.

Perhaps the coffee is strong enough to wake the dead?
Served by Zombies?
Brewed in ways we'd prefer not to know?
What's this strange resemblance between “coffee” and “coffin”?
Served with a box lunch? (cardboard box is free, copper lunch pail only $4,235, but shows you really, really cared about your lunch)
…I think I could think of more of these stupid things, but it's past my bed time

P.S. Hi Mimi!

More, martha, more!
Laurie, wouldn't it be fun for the 3 of us to sit on a porch together and larf it up.  Martha would keep us in stitches.  Does anyone say that anymore?

I agree - sitting on a porch together and visiting would be wonderful fun! “Keep us in stitches” is a great turn of phrase, but I think you're right in that it's not used much anymore.

I've heard some people call their cup of Joe “embalming fluid,” so maybe this isn't much of a stretch.  I'm a “double double” kinda gal, so I sure hope the offer “cremation” with their coffee.  :-)

Oh my gosh, otter, you are so creative too.  Between you and martha, I am going to bust a gut laughing.  No one says that anymore either.  I'm a double-double too at Timmy's.   I hear Timmy's is duking it out with Dunkin' Donuts in the US and DD is still in the lead ;>(

Your, “cereal?” (serious)……never heard that saying before, “larf it up”…..lol.

I don't know which is worse, getting advertisements in the mail from the local funeral home that have little box's your to check off if your between the ages of this and that, along with a reminder to have your funeral paid for in advance, or getting free coffee at a funeral drive through.  I wonder if they hand out pamphlets on the price of a burial along with that coffee.

Thanks for the larf, Mimi.
