President Obama Signs Historic Wild and Scenic River Bill into Law

Washington, DC American Rivers applauded President Barack Obama today for signing into the law the second largest Wild and Scenic Rivers package in history. The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 designates 86 new Wild and Scenic Rivers, totaling over 1,100 miles in Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, Utah, California, and Massachusetts. The legislation includes important protections for 350,000 acres of land along the rivers and also contains new Wilderness designations for over two million acres of public land.

Rebecca Wodder, President of American Rivers, the nation’s leading river conservation organization, attended the signing ceremony at the White House.

“The signing of this bill is an expression of the home grown support for one of the largest environmental protection measures in decades,” said Wodder.  “From ranchers, rafters and hunters in the desert country of Idaho to anglers in Oregon to bird watchers in Massachusetts, the communities across country that clamored for these protections are celebrating President Obama’s signing today.”

“America’s history and heritage are knit together by our rivers. These Wild and Scenic Rivers are the lifeblood of our communities,” added Wodder. “By protecting our rivers, President Obama is ensuring our grandchildren will enjoy a legacy of clean water, outdoor recreation and all of the economic and quality of life benefits that come with healthy rivers and wild places.”

A Wild and Scenic River designation protects riverside land along both sides of a river corridor, blocks dams and other harmful water projects, and preserves a river's free-flowing nature. It helps protect and improve clean water, as well as the river's unique historic, cultural, scenic, ecological, and recreational values.
The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was enacted in 1968. Three years ago, American Rivers set the goal of designating 40 new Wild and Scenic Rivers by the 40th anniversary of the law. With the signing of the bill today, we more than double our goal by designating 86 new Wild and Scenic Rivers. Today’s law expands the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System by more than 50 percent, bringing the total number of Wild and Scenic Rivers to 252.

“From the Snake River headwaters in Wyoming to the desert Southwest’s Fossil Creek, to the trout streams of the Rockies, and the popular fishing and paddling streams of the Pacific Northwest, local people—hikers, boaters, hunters and anglers—pushed for these historic protections,” said Wodder.

Men in Tights

Robin Hood: Men In Tights

CNN was showing the G20 Summit and  all the protesters in England in front of the banks.  They want redistribution of the weath.  It got me thinking that maybe we need some Robin Hoods and merry men in tights  to  REDISTRIBUTE THE WEALTH!
aka "take from the rich, give to the poor" instead of the other way around.

When a bank makes a $ 2 billion profit in its first quarter,  think of all the service charges you paid-- for every last thing that used to be a "service" - cheques, transferring from chequing to savings, maintenance fees on savings accounts, next to no interest on savings.  What used to be a service is now a PRODUCT.
Credit card companies don't ever want you to pay off your bill - you are their cash cow.  A bank's assets are their loans.  Yes, those are the things that make them money.  Now every transaction makes them money.  Even your inactivity makes money for them - inactivity fees.  We've been robbed daily.

So men (and ladies) put on your virtual tights.  Now where is a charismatic leader who would look great in tights?   We need you now!
Who could be our Robin Hood?

White Trash Cooking

Whitetrashcooking

Right now I am whipping up something delicious from my  "White Trash Cooking".  Here is the recipe so you can make this for yourself.

PAPER-THIN GRILL CHEESE

2 slices of Velveeta cheese (no other will do)
2 slices of white bread (no other will do)

Method:
Heat your iron skillet with a pat or two of butter in the bottom.  Put your slices of Velveeta cheese between the 2 slices of bread.  Now place it in the hot skillet.  With a turner, mash and toast the cheese sandwich on both sides until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted.  (The flatter the better)

Even though it says not to use anything but Velveeta, tonight I made Mexican Style Paper Thin Grill Cheese.  I used havarti with jalapeno pepper cheese.  I stuck with the white bread though.

I'm sure you'll also want to try   Potato Chip Sandwich, so here's the recipe.

POTATO CHIP SANDWICH

2 slices white bread
mayonnaise
potato chips

Method:
Spread the mayo generously across the bread.  Pile the potato chips on to one of the slices as high as you can.  Then top it with the other slice and mash down until all the potato chips are crushed.
Pardie Tickette says:  "Wash it down with a Pepsi, it's some good!"

What do you believe about astrology?

Bing Crosby & Frank Sinatra - Well, Did You Evah (High Society)

That Cancers should not marry Capricorns.

When I lived and worked in Toronto in the 70's, I would read my  newspaper horoscope
on the subway on my way  to work.  Everyone in the office would start the day with coffee, a cigarette, and check their horoscopes.  We would read them out loud to each other.
If there was time, we would check the Biorhythm chart just below the horoscopes to see if we were in a high or low period.  Then we'd light up another cigarette, grab some files and start work.

I've posted this video because it has an astrological reference - my favourite lines in the song I think, besides the Mimsie Farr one.

What questions have you been asking in your life recently?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for April 10, 2009:

Dscf0015
Do I really NEED all this stuff?   How did I end up with 5 glass pie plates, 3 potato mashers, 8 kinds of hand  cream, 40 rolls of toilet paper, 60 or more cook books?  10 vases, endless socks that don't match, 12 coats and jackets, etc?

As I get ready to move to a new city to be close to my daughter and grandkids, I look at every object and ask myself,

1. Do I really want to pack and unpack this (some for the 8th time).
2.  When was the last time I actually used or wore this item?
3.  Do I love this item?
4.  Does this item reflect "me" NOW? - my circumstances,  my desire for simplicity?
5.  Do I really care where or who it goes to?  Nope! just get it out of here.

Once you let go, it becomes very easy.  Holding on to loved ones belongings doesn't make them less dead.  My kids won't want my "stuff".  Right now they are disposing of a relatives belongings.  My son took some of the stuff - 2 lovely vases.  "Hey those are Moorcroft vases," I said.  Don't use them to hold up your window."

I'm trying to pack and get rid of stuff.  I opened this cupboard and it looked  so colourful, I just had to take a picture ofl it and share it with you.  It's terrific how the spices lined themselves up there in the dark to make such a magnificent display.

6 Frying Pans

Posted on Apr 24th, 2009 by mimi : MOONCHILD mimi
6_frying_pans
Do I really need 6 frying pans?  I'm moving and  packing up stuff and looking at each item or stack of items.

Frying pans....my mind wandered to my Grandmother who loved getting new frying pans.  She'd phone my mom to get my dad to take her shopping, "Bill, ma wants to go to Rosso's to get a new frying pan."  My dad would make that face and some moaning sounds.  He'd take her to the hardware store in town owned by the Rosso brothers, Phil and Joe, handsome Italian batchelors with huge white smiles.

My dad, on the other hand, didn't like to get new frying pans, well really, nothing new.  His frying pans were all  burnt and warped out of shape from putting them on too high heat.  He liked to cook with lots of bacon grease that  he collected in counter top jars or soup cans.  When I used to come and visit him in the winter, there would be frying pans lounging in the snow banks and would know that Daddy had been cooking.

Ah hell, I will just pack up all my frying pans. If I burn the bottom, a little washing soda and hot water overnight and it will be good as new in the morning.

Now I am going to fry up some eggs.  I'm going to keep any eye on them!

What does your highest self want for you today?

What Highest Self?

Is there a Higher Self?
Is there a High Self?
Is there a Low Self
Is there a Lower Self?
Is there a Lowest Self?

I'm not sure when this "Higher Self" was coined and then became an over-used  buzz word. If you think you have a Highest Self, talk to it, and tell it to get with the program, smell the coffee, hop on the bus, Gus.  Be IT ---this ideal self, so everyone will recognize it without your explaining what your Highest Self believes about itself.  It's not You, it's an idea you have about yourself.  But that is is just my opinion....which I don't have to filter through a personal Highest Self.  Phew!!

PS -What's the difference between a Higher Self and Highest Self?
Even in Al-Anon, they only go up to Higher Power, not a Highest Power.

Gardening.  I can spend endless hours outdoors working in the flower and vegetable gardens.  I love to pull weeds and edge.  In fact, if I came to visit you, I would pull a few weeds on my way up to your front door.

My kids used to holler out the back door, "Mommy, when are you coming in? it's getting dark!".  I'd reply, "In a few minutes, I just have to transplant this deutzia, and water the petunias, and..."   The birds would chirp their  final evening songs to let me know it was time to go in.

Check out this 83 year old grandma who has been a yoga teacher for over 40 years.  When you see what she is still able to do at 83, you will want to run to the nearest yoga studio and sign up for yoga classes.  Yoga has many dimensions that you can only "realize" by experiencing it and continuing to "practice".  Yoga is physically strengthening, relaxing, and spiritual.  What more could one ask for?
