Ed Ames - Try to Remember

Try to remember
the kind of September.....
September is one of my favourite months.  The Air is so flavourful, lush, bursting and fragrant - the kind that surrounds and assaults you - lush peaches, geraniums, marigolds, petunias, lavender - all giving their last best bursts. The stems of the maple leaves are red now and ready to move into the leaves.  I can touch them as they tickle my balcony railing. I loved September from the time I was a kid and dreamed that I would get married in September, but missed by 2 months.  At 66, there is still a  slight chance ?;>)
This is one of my favourite songs - I picked the Ed Ames version, but Jerry Orbach from Law and Order was the first to sing it in the Broadway show, "the Fantastics" or is it Fantasticks? Harry Belefonte has a lovely version too. And Julie Andrews.

This blog piece was inspired by Dryad's blog piece, "Circular Egg Dancing" which is a gorgeous work of art.  Check it out.  Dryad is magic.

I like September too. I remarked the other day on how the mornings are beginning to smell different. I went into the Army on Sept 14, 1966. And that was the start of many stories.

I like September too,I like all the months….maybe not March cuz it gets slushy and wet and cold…maybe if i lived somewhere else it would be my favorite month.
I like the song too.
Mimi it's been 30 all week here almost reaching 40 the other day,it's still summer, and yes everything so lush and the fragrances of flowers and fruits linger. this place is nuts,40 C in the summer and -40 C in the winter, sometimes I feel meteorologically confused ;-)

Hey Sweet B.B.
You've got to be Canadian!  Only we endure and love/hate the change of seasons with number busting temperatures. We must live not that far way from each other.  Here,in Niagara Falls (ON)  it is Summer in September  .  Yesterday it was almost 90 with  high humidity, but there was a nice breeze blowing.  It reminded me of being in Costa Rica. .

Hey maze,
Yikes! 1966 - going into the army then meant you could be shipped to Viet Nam in a blink.
I know you talk about army buddies, but did you have to go to Viet Nam?
I was married in Toronto in 1966 to an American from Florida and a few months later,  his reserve unit was called up and he was ordered to immediately report to a reserve unit or he would be drafted and sent to Viet Nam immediately.  We were living in Toronto at the time.  He had to find the closest reserve unit in Western N.Y.  The unit he tried to get into was full.  Good thing because they got dispatched to Viet Nam a week after he was told it was full.  –ah, that's another story, another blog, a story for the family history anyway….

Mimi, I love that song, too. It brings back many memories, but also serves as a reminder to live life to the fullest, taking advantage of each and every moment, so that there are no regrets.
I love September because I return to teaching and get to meet beautiful students from all over the world, but I always keep in mind that any day is a good day regardless of the season or the weather.

hi Mimi, yes, it's been really hot in Montreal, and we do tend to get much the same weather as you all, about a day later… I have been loving the extra long summer, since the weather usually “breaks” in August… and I'm a tropical girl originally :)

September is so intense. Busy at work, and everything else gets started up too - choir Monday, yoga next week, weekly teleconferences (once or twice a week lol) for something or another work-related…. it's been a lovely summer with lots of time for Gaia and travels and just relaxing…

but right this moment, it's very peaceful, with the new format of radio 2 in the background, gentle classical, and no one else in the house - i never feel during the summer that i wish my kids weren't around so much, but it is so lovely to have the house to myself again during the day!

big hugs!

Hi Mimi,  I have a love/hate realationship with September.  For all the things you so aptly described that's appealing, I also find appealing – it definitely brings out the nostalgia for me.

Then, there's work, and though, after a peaceful summer, I feel energized and ready to jump in with both feet and hit the deck running – mixing metaphors here? – I also know that the work environment is a place of chaos and high drama.  In all the past years, I'm burned out by November.

This year, I'm going back with a deeper experience of being present in the moment, and I intend to experience work through that lens as much as I can.

Thanks for the reminder of why September is so wonderful.
Judi

That humidity makes the clothes on the line feel wet even after they have been in the sun all day.
It also does something real nice to everyone's skin,a sort of summer sheen ,it feels and looks healthy. I try to keep in the shade though, holy moley it's been hot here.

thanks all for stopping by and taking time to comment.
Peace - what a good job - teaching ESL and meeting people from different cultures.  It must feel good to see them progress.  English is a hard  to learn as a 2nd language , I have heard.

Hey Nicole, I like radio 2 too. big ((hugs))) back

hey Janet - hang in there, it's only September.  I dreamed of the day I could retire and not be in the workplace.  It is lovely out here now.  ((hugs))

LOL it's like BB;s March here, summer has been wet and cloudy grey and humid and september is feelig cold as autumn with grey cloud and relentless rain, a very brief spot sun broke through the cloud this afternoon , more heavy rain forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Summer seems to have missed us completely

hard to believe that it is really cold somewhere. Very hot here. like summer but the pools are closed, commented somebody to me today. I call that last burst of color, the bloom before the frost and liken it to the middle ages. I love this month best of all.

Hey Dear Zephyr, hope some smiley sunshine heads your way.  Sounds dreary there.

Hey Sweet jenni, we are getting the hot stuff too now in September.  Maybe the pools will stay open until October if this climate change business is for real ;>)

Thanks for posting this, Mimi. Several years ago I spent a summer in Washington D.C. ushering at Ford's Theater where my girfriend at the time was performing in “The Fantasticks”. Must have heard this song a good 400 times or so and hadn't really considered it, or September, in this light until reading your post. It's a unique month indeed. At any rate, here's wishing you a great September :) .

Hi Shane,
How fabulous that you got to hear this beautiful song so many times.  I think The Fantasticks was still running in the late 90”s, one of the longest running Broadway Shows ever.  I would never get sick of hearing this sound.  Hope you are enjoying your September.

Thanks JG for your comments and the great link.  I loved that duet.  I was lucky enough to see both Nana Maskouri and Harry Belafonte in person in Toronto in the 1970's.

I love best  the Harry Belafonte version (the old black and white one on you tube.  It is the most touching perfomance of the song.  But Ed Ames still sounds good at 80 years old!!! Imagine!    Happy September, JG!

Hey Res,
Do you love the smell of marigold?  I think they are quite magical. High temps and humidity here too in Niagara.  Would love to have you drop by and have some pie too!

Hey Ricky,  glad you enjoyed the song.  I feel the same way when I hear this song.  It reminds me of long time ago really good stuff that I can almost taste and smell.   Being alive right now in September is making me woozy with delight.

(((hugs)) everyone

how wonderful….what a heartfelt experience that must have been. Nana and Harry make such an out of this world duet.

I agree, Ed Ames has a most beautiful voice and I am still playing it over and over. Gives me hope that I too can be eighty years young one day. lolol.

I sent it to my Dad in Oz today for his birthday. I know my darling parents will love it.

thank you soooo much for this bliss.
