This is an inspiring, intriguing talk by a neuroanatomist who was studying the brain to try to help her schizophrenic brother when she suffered a stroke one morning.
Just watch the video....nothing I could say could do it justice. You will be surprised and inspired, and Illuminated. It is not syrupy.

Help

I enjoyed watching this video. Remarkable.
Merci beaucoup for posting the suggestion to watch that video. I needed to learn those things. I also teach students about perception, and her explanation of how she experiences the malfunctioning of the basic perception processes might be well received as a discussion starter, because I'm pretty sure my students don't know what I'm talking about. A great illustrator. Also, her discovery that the left and right brains have profound functions in consciousness may be a generative contribution to human knowledge of human nature!
Do you remember “the bicameral mind”? It was a theory popular during the late '70's. It posited that the right & left brains used to be much more connected than they are today.
Hi Sweet Martha,
Thank you for taking time to read my blog and watch the video. i loved her explanation of the different functions of the right and left sides of the brain. Especially moving and significant to me was her describing how the right brain deals with present moment.
That is because my brain attack in 2000 left me in right brain state of NOW. I tried in vain to explain this as being in a permant state of meditation. This was not my choice. Messages were not getting to my left brain. I belong to a Brain Injury group and we laughingly say that our injuries put us into the state - others have to pay for books or go to classes or watch videos to find out about this PLACE in your mind. So it is a gift in a way.
Before my brain attacks, I “tried” to meditate. I read the books, I tried not to think about the fact I was tryng to meditate. I could not find the key to unlock the door and gain entrance.
But one day, I awoke on the other side of the door –. Today, i can be in that PLACE in seconds, because I know it exists and readily available to me.
With first attack, I suffered from severe perceptual problems. Today, it is not as bad because i taught myself coping strategies, and spent a lot of time doing internet searches I would be glad to share information about perceptual problems with you. if it would be any help. I kept diaries as i was struggling with no one to help me or listen to me, or believe me. That was the worse part.
I do not know the bicameral mind. I was pretty much out of the picture iin the 70's. it was a blur after my husband left me and our 2 infant children. He left me with a head injury - probably the cause of my aneurysm and brain seizure.in 1973. I had to somehow survive, work, and care for 2 children by myself. Somehow I did it, but I don't remember music, politicis, movies. I do however, remember the hideous clothes of the 70's! The clunky shoes and bell bottoms were the worst.
I have gone on too long……….for a change….
