WHAT I SAW on my way home from the drug store

Pushing my walker, I headed up the overpass bridge going over the multi-lane highway, I saw flashes of gold hovering in the air near the top rail of the bridge. As I drew closer, I realized it was a small flock of goldfinches feasting on a huge patch of thistles gone to fuzzy seed. Who knew that these thorny weeds could bring such pleasure. Luckily the highway department had not blasted the thistles with weed killer.
Just at the base of the bridge, I looked up at 2 squirrels doing tight-rope tricks on the telephone wire cutting across the bridge. A car load of teenagers screamed real loud at me as they drove by - they like to do that - scare old ladies - for fun it seems.
I approached the mulberry tree that makes such a huge mess on the sidewalk when the berries drop.. Lots of birds made lots of noise in the tree.. Some birds sat on the abandoned red shopping cart under the tree. As I walked along, the berries squished under my feet and splashed juices onto my white summer pants cuffs.. The squished berries lodged in the soles of my shoes and into the wheels of my walker. Luckily, I found an old cigarette package to use as a scraper. And a stick.
I sat down on a low wall with a huge patch of Queen Anne's Lace behind me. I've been told It is considered a noxious weed, but the many varieties of bees were having a good time visiting blossoms. I watched them. A wild apple tree was showing off some golden apples way, way high up. Its lower branches had all been removed.
The bees all hummed their songs in the scraggy grass. I spotted a broken beer bottle and 2 discared Tim Horton coffee cups among the chicory and timothy grass. Just at the end of the greenery, just before the cement of the car repair place, on the last piece of grass was a fresh dog turd in 3 pieces. Then the cement took over.
As I turned into my driveway, I saw a flash of red ahead.in the grass. It was a red maple leaf car freshener with its string still intact. I picked it up to examine it, sniffed it, yep, it still was good, and put it back on the ground and walked the few more steps home.
